NYC's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to make his home in the traditional Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that became a focal point in his election bid.

A Historic Residence

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the mayoral home for the majority of New York City mayors since the World War II era.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a central platform, hesitated to declare this decision promptly after his victory in November.

"My choice came down to our family's safety and the importance of directing all of my focus on carrying out the agenda for affordability the city's residents elected me on," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.

A Fond Farewell

His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, an area renowned for its abundance of cultural enclaves and international dining.

"To the people of Astoria: my gratitude for showing us what is great about New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"Even though I'm moving in the neighborhood, it will forever remain inside me and my efforts as mayor," he said.

A Contentious Issue

In his campaign, Mamdani connected his core platform – halting rent increases – to his circumstances as a tenant.

Yet his rivals, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for remaining in the apartment despite the fact that he hails from a prominent family.

Previous Exceptions

Not every mayor have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, chose to live in his private home on the Upper East Side throughout his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg argued it could serve as a venue for public city functions, and pushed for a major refurbishment of the aging mansion.

A Stately Residence

As he settles into Gracie Mansion near his swearing-in on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment a stark contrast to his humble Astoria home.

Adorned in pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure overlooking the East River.

Within, the first floor of the classically designed mansion is appointed consistent with the home's early 19th-century origins.

The compound, which allegedly has several bedrooms, also has increased security measures to protect the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

A number of people have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care the skeptics say," he declared in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

His former home is rent-stabilized, meaning the city imposes caps on how much building managers can increase rent each year.

Tenants view rent-stabilized housing as valuable lifelines as the housing expenses rises faster than the average income.

Data indicated Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
