Uche Ignites Dominant Crystal Palace Triumph at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Even though entering their first-ever continental adventure, Crystal Palace are learning very quickly. Missing star players like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the London club left Dublin with a comfortable win that all but guarantees them a place in the Europa Conference League playoffs.
A further three points in their next match against Finland's KuPS should be sufficient to secure straight passage to the knockout stages, especially after a prior stumble against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Grasp the Opportunity
This match offered a chance for several Palace's fringe talent to impress. Christantus Uche, in only his second start since arriving on loan from Getafe, opened the account with a clinical finish. Striker Eddie Nketiah contributed a another, scoring for the second game in succession.
A Shelbourne team that had concluded their domestic season were no match against a largely second-string Palace outfit. The visitors were further weakened by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with knee injuries.
Control Asserted from the Outset
In spite of heavy rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly established dominance. A flowing passing sequence in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, allowed Nketiah to set up Uche for a straightforward tap-in.
Midfielder Adam Wharton went close soon after, fizzing a long-range shot over the bar. Nketiah subsequently claimed for a penalty after racing into the area, but the referee dismissed the protests.
The formerArsenal man did not have wait long to get his goal, tapping home from a yard out after Uche's shot had hit the post.
The home side were clinging on for dear life. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to avoid a booking for two robust challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the crossbar with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Wraps Up the Game
The contest was as good as over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past some weak challenges before calmly dispatching a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
Following the break, coach Oliver Glasner took the chance to rest several players like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse came close to scoring with his very first touch, only to see his effort blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one shot strike off each posts before being gathered on the line. Uche then blazed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still room for development in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a second-half injury to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to earn his senior debut, capping an otherwise positive night for the visiting side.
