Taliban Employed Left-Behind British Gear to Locate Local Nationals Who Worked With Allied Troops, Inquiry Hears
A confidential source has revealed the Afghan leak inquiry that the UK abandoned classified technology enabling the Taliban to identify Afghans who worked with allied troops.
Data Breach Endangers Thousands in Danger
The source, known as Person A, stated that people concerned by the security lapse were instructed to move homes and change their contact details to protect themselves from the ruling authorities.
Members of Parliament are currently examining official response of a catastrophic disclosure of personal details affecting nearly 19,000 Afghans who had asked to move to the United Kingdom to escape militant rule.
How the Leak Was Discovered
A data file with private information, including names, contact details and occasionally family information, was inadvertently disclosed by a staff member employed at UK special forces headquarters in last year.
The breach came to light in late 2023, when details of multiple applicants who had requested to relocate to the UK were posted on social media.
Regime's Resources
“There seems to be this misconception that Afghan rulers do not have similar capabilities that western nations possess,” the whistleblower testified to lawmakers.
Technology was deserted in Afghanistan; they have it. Once they acquire mobile details, they can locate your precise location. This is exactly how specialized teams accomplished.”
Under inquiry about whether the Taliban had access to advanced decryption, the source stated: “They have complete capability.”
Consequences of the Data Breach
Preliminary research submitted to the investigation estimated that approximately fifty relatives and associates of people concerned by the incident had been executed.
A superinjunction about the leak was implemented in last year and restricted any information about it from public disclosure until July 2025.
Security Recommendations
Due to legal constraints, the whistleblower and the volunteer organization she collaborated with informed individuals at risk they were assisting that they had “suspicions that mobile communications had been compromised”.
“Our suggestion was that they relocate when possible and changed their contact details. Those were the crucial data that, should militant forces acquired such data, would lead to their location being found,” Person A explained.
Challenged Assessments
The whistleblower disputed that internal investigation carried out by an ex-government employee had been incorrect to determine that the possession of the records by militant forces was “not significantly alter an individual's existing exposure”.
“The thing to remember is that these individuals are not standing up to the Taliban; they live secretly. Everything boils down to former occupations.”
She detailed disturbing violence experienced by at-risk Afghans, comprising electric shock torture, interrogation techniques, and severe beatings.
“There are cases of toddlers who have had their arms broken to pressure the family to disclose hiding places,” the whistleblower revealed.
