Rampant Hearts Outclass Struggling The Hoops to Move Eight Pts Clear
Key points
- Hearts' attacking duo earn victory for the hosts and send them eight ahead at the top
- Callum McGregor equalized early Murray own goal
- Hosts go 13 games without defeat for first time in 27 years
Rampant Hearts powered eight points clear of their Glasgow rivals at the summit of the Scottish Premiership to strengthen their early-season title credentials and deepen the struggles around the Celtic team.
A superb goal from Kyziridis and a spot-kick from Shankland gave the Hearts team a 3-1 lead that the reigning champions could not overcome.
The young defender - among three youth players in the Celtic XI - scored an own goal early on to put Hearts ahead at a bouncing Tynecastle, and it was the youngster's infringement that led to the spot-kick.
Callum McGregor's classy first goal of the season had swiftly equalized Hearts' opener, and the Swedish attacker almost put Rodgers' team in front, opting for finesse over power and allowing the Hearts keeper to save from close range.
But the unstoppable Hearts side seized control again to consign the visitors to successive league defeats for the initial occasion since 2023.
It also gives the Hearts a commanding advantage at the top of the table.
The last time they were this far ahead was in the 2005-2006 season under their former manager, when they ultimately finished second - a rare instance that a team has not secured the title having held such a lead in the last three decades.
McInnes, whose former team were second to Celtic on four occasions, has been at pains to downplay championship discussions, as the club seek their maiden league title since the 1960s.
The Celtic boss has seen it all before at the club - both flawless and stuttering starts to a season. He's never ended as runner-up.
But on the weekend's performance, this Edinburgh outfit showed they need to be taken seriously.
Analysis: The hosts Take Advantage of Depleted Celtic
The Edinburgh side started with the self-assurance of a side unbeaten in the league this season - the popular attacker poked a cross in for the striker to fire off target.
Celtic didn't aid their cause with some unusual sloppiness in possession and they faltered under their initial test.
Claudio Braga's header was touched on to a post by Kasper Schmeichel and Shankland's return ball was diverted goalwards by the unfortunate Murray, in for the injured Cameron Carter-Vickers.
Celtic grew into the contest and started building moves. From one such move, the midfielder released Tierney to square for McGregor, who rolled in.
Apart from the opportunity for Nygren, Celtic struggled to create much for striker Kenny or his substitute Yamada amid the absence of injured forwards Kelechi Iheanacho and Daizen Maeda.
Hearts rediscovered their energy and adaptability in creating chances in the opposition half. The Greek forward, one of the finds of the club's scouting network, struck low past Schmeichel from the just outside the area.
Immediately after, Murray fouled the midfielder in the inside right channel and Shankland scored. And it could've been an more comprehensive victory, had replacement Ageu not been denied by the shot-stopper.
Celtic's second half was partially encapsulated in a couple of moments involving big-money recruit Engles.
The set-piece from Engles delivery was in sharp opposition to his European display in the Europa League win over their Austrian opponents and the Belgium international was then yellow-carded for a professional foul.
What They Said
The Hearts manager: "The effort from the squad is evident, the team spirit. That's not sufficient on its own to win games week in, week out.
"Our strength lies in, is good technical ability. You're seeing that from a lot of players who have been here before. Some of the new signings are eager to show that.
"We're in a positive moment at the minute, but it's just one win. It's important for us to keep winning. We've got loads to do, plenty to improve. Following the initial fixtures is normally an indication of your standing."
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers: "The second goal was disappointing from our perspective. We didn't move when the play was recycled as a defensive unit so when they play it, they ought to be caught offside but weren't. We have got to improve with the attempt.
"Plenty of matches to play for. It's only the beginning. It's only nine games in. Obviously, being eight points behind is not what we would want. The comfort is there's so many games to play.
"Our attention must turn on the present and look to find more consistency and more quality in our play."
