Puzzling Rosy Sludge on Remote Tasmanian Shoreline Spurs Fears of Potential Phytoplankton Proliferation

Agencies in the island state are attempting to pinpoint a rosy sludge that has surfaced on a secluded beach, with a number of researchers anxious it could be an algal bloom.

Extensive Presence Along Shore

The pink-tinged sludge was found on a portion of Randalls Bay about 60 kilometers south of the city. A like substance has also been recorded on areas of a nearby shore and Little Taylors Bay.

Examples Collected for Testing

Samples have been taken and submitted to the regulatory body for examination. A representative remarked that "phytoplankton proliferations are a natural occurrence in reaction to changes in minerals, temperature, rainfall or sunlight".

"They are occasionally called reddish tides because the outbreaks can color the water reddish," the representative noted. "Few algal blooms are toxic, with many species serving as a key source of nourishment for animals in the oceanic food chain."

"The primary reason of reddish water in local waters is the marine phytoplankton Noctiluca scintillans, which can cause glowing light shows at night."

Increasing Occurrence Linked to Climate Change

Phytoplankton proliferations are natural events but their rate has increased in the past few years, in part due to climate change and contamination that merge to create nutrient-rich waters ideal for the rapid spread of dinoflagellates.

Dinoflagellates are a marine plant that typically act as the ocean's garbage cleaners. During a proliferation, there is a quick expansion in their colonies that disturbs the normal functioning of ecosystems.

These occurrences have been compared to underwater bushfires and can keep expanding as long as conditions are ripe. In more extreme scenarios, sensitive marine ecosystems can be destroyed as marine life is destroyed or smothered, providing more nutrients for the proliferation.

Past Severe Event in a neighboring state

A southern state not long ago grappled with a severe algae outbreak along its coastal region after a string of marine heatwaves, which expanded across thousands of square kilometres. The event caused swimmers with eye irritation and persistent coughs and may have caused the death of up to a quarter-million sea creatures across 400 different species, according to agency assessments.

Specialist Assessment on the Current Event

An estuarine ecologist, who was involved in studying the onset of the previous algal bloom commented, based on images of the local event, the likely culprit involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a form of dinoflagellate also known as "ocean glitter".

"There are numerous of these blooms around Tassie of late," she added.

The scientist said this organism did not produce harmful substances like the type involved in the previous devastating event, but it does ingest tiny creatures and "many fish eggs", meaning marine life were in greatest danger.

"It's common to observe a proliferation of this algae after a bloom of another organism, or for example a marine breeding," she said.

Calls for Investigation and Community Health

A marine scientist, who collected samples of the pink sludge in the state, commented it looked like the potential proliferation had "expanded greatly" and indicated the salmon farming industry was the probable cause, pointing to similar cases in other places.

"Thus we needs to issue a clear message here, the officials and the EPA need to act to this. We need to analyse the samples we've gathered and we need to put word out the community here," she said.

The scientist stated she had worries for public safety after noticing a numbness along her arms and face while being splashed with affected seawater.

Reports of Dead Marine Life and Calls for Government Action

An advocacy organization has reported dead octopus and dead sea cucumbers washing ashore, with a longtime environmental campaigner calling the situation as an "natural disaster" and calling on the state premier to inspect and "assume command the reaction that government must be doing".

"The leader needs to understand this is a disaster in the making, commercially as well as for nature."

Addressing the media, the premier stated he was uninformed of any links between the algae outbreak and the salmon industry, stating scientific testing was needed before judgments could be reached.

"We must make certain our aquatic environments are environmentally safe and viable," he added.

"The 1,200 beaches across the island are our treasures and we need to make sure the public and our industry can coexist to enjoy our waterways efficiently and sustainably."
