Prison Surprise: Brazil's Ex-President Jair Bolsonaro Faces Life Behind Bars

He contested justice and the law won.

Two months after receiving a quarter-century plus sentence for attempting to “destroy” Brazil’s political system, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro now looks jail-bound.

Expected Jailing

The convicted instigator – who had been subject to house arrest in his mansion while a series of judicial steps and appeals unfold – is largely predicted to be incarcerated in the near future, during mounting speculation that he will be sent to a well-known maximum security prison.

Historical Comments on Convicts

Over Bolsonaro’s 40-year political career, the conservative ex- military man displayed minimal mercy for Brazil’s inmates.

“Why should we offer those dirtbags a comfortable existence?” he once mused. “They ought to simply be messed, period. That's my opinion.”

At another time, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “Should you not wish to end up there, you simply need is not rape, abduction or theft.”

Incarceration Destination Discussion

But the possibility of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda prison top-security prison in Brasília has horrified supporters, four of whom this week visited the complex in an obvious effort to dissuade the supreme court from sending him there.

The senator, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was one of the visitors, stated he predicted the septuagenarian figure to be incarcerated in the coming fortnight and feared his destination could be Papuda.

Lucas claimed Bolsonaro’s acute gut problems – the outcome of a near-fatal knife attack during the last election race – implied it would be hazardous to keep the former president there. “His condition is highly critical. He will not be able to handle it if they move him to Papuda … It could be awful,” he added, who also worried about packed cells and the standard of inmate food.

When inspecting Papuda, Lucas noted witnessing cells containing forty inmates: “That’s almost one square metre per inmate.

“We talked to the convicts and they grumble, naturally, of the terrible food,” remarked the senator.

Allies Speak Out

The senator isn't the lone figure speaking out before the one-time head of state's expected detention.

Writing in a leading publication, a different supporter, the ex- cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “harsh” finale to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” time in office and claimed Brazil was about to see “the biggest wrong in its record”.

“This is an unfairness that erodes the hearts of many people in Brazil,” Wajngarten wrote.

Varied General Reaction

That may be true considering the substantial following Bolsonaro holds on the right-wing. Yet his expected imprisonment has also pleased the spirits of many individuals who think he should be imprisoned for plotting to block his successor from becoming president – and additionally conspiring to have him assassinated.

Reimont Otoni, a politician for the sitting administration's Workers’ party, said: “No one wishes Bolsonaro to be sent in a dark cell. Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to be sent in solitary confinement. Not a soul desires Bolsonaro to go hungry or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We desire him to get dignified handling – but proper handling behind bars. He must not carry on being his own prison warden for his lifetime.”

He observed how Bolsonaro backers, who have for a long time praising the tough conditions of convicts, had suddenly become aware to their entitlements. “Recently has the conservative fringe – which has repeatedly argued that human rights should not be for lawbreakers – decided to inspect a penitentiary to learn what conditions are truly like,” he stated.

“The former president is a lawbreaker,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he merited “degrading, demeaning treatment”.

Possible Jail Facilities

Regardless of talk that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which currently holds about fourteen thousand inmates, his expected location appears to be a nearby prison for law enforcement and other “unique” detainees known as Papudinha (Small Papuda).

The accommodations are far more adequate than those in the primary facility, although nevertheless a far cry from the opulence Bolsonaro enjoyed while residing in the stunning leader's home, around 12 miles away.

As per reports, the accommodation Bolsonaro could likely occupy in Papudinha has about 24 sq metres – approximately the size of a couple of car spots – and features a 12 square meter WC with a shower and a 12 sq metre terrace. “He could be allowed to have a TV and even a cooler in his cell as long as they were provided by his family,” information suggested.

Ideological Responses

The lawmaker criticized the rumoured idea to send the ex-president to Papuda as “a type of retaliation” on the part of the supreme court judge who oversaw Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will decide his future in the {
