There are "no plans" for American leader President Trump to confer with Russian President Putin "anytime soon", a administration representative has declared.

This past week Trump indicated he and the Kremlin leader would hold talks in Hungary's capital within two weeks to examine the war in Ukraine.

A planning session between America's top diplomat Secretary Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was due to be held this week - but the White House clarified the two had had a "positive" discussion and that a face-to-face session was no longer "necessary".

The administration did not share any more details on the reason the negotiations had been postponed.

Previous Developments

The US president had raised the possibility of a Budapest summit over the phone with the Russian leader, a just prior to hosting Ukraine's President Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Certain accounts suggested his meeting with Zelensky had been a "contentious discussion", with sources indicating the president had pressured him to cede extensive regions of eastern Ukraine as part of a settlement with Moscow.

Yet, on Monday Trump endorsed a ceasefire proposal supported by Ukraine and European leaders to freeze the hostilities on the current front line.

"Leave it as is the way it is," he said.

Moscow has repeatedly pushed back against pausing the existing front lines.

The Russian government was only interested in "permanent resolution", Lavrov stated on Tuesday, suggesting that halting hostilities would only amount to a short-term truce.

Negotiating Stances

The "fundamental issues" of the war needed to be addressed, the Russian diplomat said, using Kremlin shorthand for a set of comprehensive conditions that include the recognition of complete Moscow control over the eastern region as well as the military reduction of Ukraine – a non-starter for Ukraine and its European partners.

Zelensky said talks regarding the battle positions were the "start of negotiations" but that Russia was "taking all measures" to avoid diplomacy.

He additionally stated the exclusive issue that could make Moscow "pay attention" was that of the delivery of long-range weapons to the Ukrainian military.

Military Considerations

The Russian president's unscheduled call with the US leader recently came ahead of rumors that the US was considering delivering extended-range cruise missiles to Ukrainian forces that could potentially strike inside Russia.

Zelensky said it was the weapons consideration that had compelled Moscow to participate in talks. The discussion regarding the missiles had turned out to be a "significant input" in international relations", he commented.
