NY Launches Portal for Public to Share ICE Footage Following Detentions of Four American Citizens
The state AG has introduced a new online portal asking residents to submit images and footage of ICE operations across the state. This action comes just a shortly after a high-profile ICE raid shook NYC's Chinatown, sparking large-scale demonstrations.
US Citizens Detained In Raid
A lawmaker revealed during a news conference that four US citizens were taken into custody and held for "almost a full day" after Tuesday's raid. Demonstrations broke out in New York on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
"Each citizen is entitled to exist without intimidation," state officials wrote in a statement.
"If you witnessed and captured immigration enforcement recently, I encourage you to provide that material with the authorities. We are pledged to reviewing these submissions and determining any legal breaches."
Form Details
The portal includes fields to submit photos and videos of the incident, along with a field to note location information. Prior to sending, individuals must tick a option that acknowledges that "authorities might employ any evidence provided in a public document, such as in a lawsuit or official statement."
Information about the ICE Action
The Chinatown raid, which observers say involved over fifty federal agents, took place in a famous neighborhood of NYC where imitation products and merchandise are commonly traded in large quantities – frequently to visitors.
Recordings of the operation reveal several masked and armed federal agents securing and holding a person, and pushing back witnesses. Masses of locals followed the personnel through the streets. An armored truck was also seen traveling down the Manhattan avenues.
Political Response
During a midweek briefing held with the New York immigrant rights coalition, Representative Goldman, a Democratic representative, announced that four American citizens were detained by ICE for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no conditions where nationals should be taken for without cause." He clarified the individuals were released on the following day with no accusations made.
"The goal is evident here. It is not about removing offenders," the congressman remarked. "This represents a armed campaign to incite tension. It is merely a pretext to generate turmoil for the government to utilize the troops to halt violence that they have created."
Widespread Condemnation
Fury over the immigration operation escalated – every NYC mayor hopefuls criticized the incident, as did Governor Kathy Hochul.
"Yet again, the current administration opts for heavy-handed tactics that instill panic, not safety. It has to end," a political candidate stated.
The city's community groups spoke out as well.
"ICE descended on the neighborhood with tactical trucks, covered personnel and riot gear to focus on small merchants trying to make a living. This raid had nothing to do with community security and was entirely about frightening communities and areas," remarked the leader of a major immigrant coalition.
ICE Policies
Official guidelines prohibits the detention of US citizens and the agency has stated it does not arrest or detain American nationals. Yet, investigative journalism has found that numerous citizens have been taken illegally by ICE during the period of the present government.
Current Situation
Immigration operations have been cropping up increasingly in the state and nationwide this year.
An October operation in midtown Manhattan was the first known raid on an immigrant shelter of the present government. Protests opposing immigration enforcement are ubiquitous as are allegations of force and abusive practices.
Recently, a submission filed by advocacy organizations stated inadequate care of expectant mothers in detention centers.
