Jimmy Cliff, Reggae Legend and Cultural Figure, Passes Away at 81 Years of Age

Global audiences mourns the loss of Jimmy Cliff, the renowned Jamaican reggae singer and actor whose captivating vocal talent played a key role in popularizing the reggae genre worldwide. He has died at the age of 81.

“With deep sorrow that I announce that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure episode followed by pneumonia,” wrote his spouse Latifa on social media. “I am thankful for his family, close friends, peers in the arts and coworkers who walked with him on his journey. To all his supporters globally, please know that your encouragement was his strength during his whole career … Jimmy, my dear, may you rest in peace. I will honor your wishes.” The message was co-signed by their offspring, Lilty and Aken.

Jimmy Cliff was beloved for hit songs including You Can Get It If You Really Want, “I Can See Clearly Now” and Wonderful World, Beautiful People. His upbeat musical style and uplifting spirit earned him a large and longstanding fanbase.

In addition to his music achievements, Cliff starred in the 1972’s drama film The Harder They Come, a performance that was highly acclaimed and is viewed as a landmark of Jamaican cinema.

He was one of just a handful of artists, including Bob Marley and other greats, to be honored with the prestigious Order of Merit from Jamaica.
