Israelis commemorate two-year anniversary of October 7th incident as Palestinian ceasefire negotiations proceed
Israelis have come together around the country to mark two years since the Hamas-led assault on 7 October 2023, as discussions continued in Egypt over a resolution to the war in Gaza.
The attack resulted in over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as hostages. It was the single deadliest day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.
Israel reacted by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are seen as trustworthy by the United Nations and other world agencies.
"Our violent enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not broken us," the leader remarked on that day.
He also promised to "realize all the aims of the war: the return of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will no longer pose a risk to Israel".
Commemorative Ceremonies Across Israel
The government authorities delayed formal commemorations until October 16th - after the completion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still occurred throughout the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the loved ones of Israelis killed in the Hamas attack was conducted in the coastal city. Arranged by the families themselves, it was televised across Israeli TV networks.
A period earlier, a silent tribute was respected around the country.
Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt
Simultaneously, both sides' delegations convened in the North African coastal city of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of mediated discussions to discuss the conditions of the plan.
A high-ranking representative involved in the negotiations said that an late session of indirect talks started at evening in Egypt.
The representative said the morning session ended without tangible results, due to disagreements over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not recommence hostilities after the first phase of the agreement.
He noted that the talks are "challenging and have yet to produce any major advancement," but mentioned that facilitators are striving to reduce the differences between the conflicting groups.
Key Issues in Discussions
- A permanent ceasefire
- The trade of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The removal of military personnel from Gaza
- Arrangements for relief supplies deliveries
- Post-war governance of the area
Public Sentiment
In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square previously, 29-year-old Hagar - whose brother survived the attack on the outdoor event, where hundreds were lost their lives and numerous more were captured by Hamas militants - shared: "No location feels like home anymore and until every captive return no one will have peace of mind."
"Once we see everyone home once more, we can feel relief again. Then we can begin to rebuild," she added.
Outside the leader's residence in Jerusalem, people congregated to express their support for the families of the hostages. Israel reports nearly fifty remain in captivity in Gaza, twenty of whom are considered to be alive.
Demonstrator one woman remarked: "It's necessary do any agreement required for the hostages to be released. But we really want guarantees that we will be secure."
Surveys now frequently demonstrate that around the majority of the population want the war to end in return for the release of the captives.
Palestinian Situation
At the location of the music event, those paying respects came together to remember the victims.
From that location, the sound of military attacks and artillery could be noticed just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the heavy Israeli bombardment persisted.
In the main city, attacks were noted in the morning of Tuesday in the west side Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and zone areas and in the east side neighbourhood of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.
"As the dusk falls, the fear arrives with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a mother, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli air strike previously, described.
"We are terrified of the air strikes. All the night we are sleeping together, embracing, particularly my youngest child who rests his face on me the entire evening."
"Every second we look at the updates to see what happened. And I'm afraid that this halt will not be completed and that the conflict will come back to us."
Medical Crisis
The healthcare center in Gaza City announced it had taken in the remains of six people by the daytime, including a trio who lost their lives in an Israeli bombing in the south part district.
A different healthcare center in the south region of the city indicated additional dead people had been brought there. A person was died by Israeli forces while seeking aid to the south region, health workers stated.
