Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that individuals who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People purchasing these drugs must be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to original weight in about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally see a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Experts believe the way of the injections is key to understanding the amplified rebound.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Accounts

Individuals who have come off the medication describe a intense return of hunger.

"It was like something that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," said one woman.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Use

Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
