Tropical Storm Melissa is forecast to strengthen into a uncommon highest-level cyclone as it veers toward the Caribbean island, bringing deadly flash flooding and landslides.

This weather system, which registered winds of up to 195 km/h as of 06:00 GMT, is currently turning northwest in the Caribbean and is anticipated to reach land by midweek, according to meteorological authorities.

Warnings are also in effect for areas in Haiti such as the capital, Port au Prince, the adjacent nation and the eastern part of Cuba, where Melissa is anticipated to bring analogous consequences by the midweek period.

Melissa is projected to pass over Cuba by Wednesday before traveling via the Greater Antilles and emerging into the open ocean.
