Federal Authorities Reduces US Flights as Shutdown Continues

With the unprecedented federal government shutdown approaches day 38, US flight paths are set to become somewhat quieter. Contrastingly for US terminals.

Safety Measures Put in Place

Donald Trump’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has said flight numbers are being lowered to uphold air traffic control safety during the federal government funding lapse, currently the lengthiest in history and with no apparent progress of a resolution between GOP lawmakers and Democratic representatives to end the federal budget impasse.

Flight oversight bodies pinpointed “busiest routes” where the FAA says air traffic needs cutting by 4% by early morning Eastern Time on Friday, a step requiring airlines to cancel thousands of flights and trigger a cascade of scheduling problems and delays at some of the nation’s largest airports.

Administration Remarks

The federal transportation leader, Sean Duffy, stated on online platforms Thursday that the action was “not about politics” but rather “involving evaluation the data and reducing growing safety concerns in the system as controllers continue working without pay”.

“Flying is safe today, tomorrow, and the day after because of the preventive measures we are taking,” the official added.

Flight Cancellations

Analysts forecast hundreds or even thousands of flights could be canceled. These reductions might account for up to 1,800 flights and over 268,000 seats total, based on an estimate by the aviation analytics firm Cirium.

Affected Airports

The targeted air hubs including over 25 states include the busiest ones across the US – such as Atlanta, North Carolina's city, DEN, DFW, Orlando, California gateway, MIA and San Francisco. Among key urban centers – such as New York, Texas city and Illinois hub – several air terminals will be affected.

The trio of airports operating in the DC metro – IAD, BWI and Ronald Reagan Washington national – will be affected, inevitably causing flight disruptions for elected representatives as well as other travelers.
